There are many faces to the 4 H club programs. There are activities for everyone.

Goat Team

The goat team provides the members an opportunity to raise an animal through show competition. The individual must keep detailed records on the care and development of the goat as well as learn showmanship and the proper preparation of the animal for competition. There are numerous opportunities to show the animals in both 4-H and other sponsored competitions. The goat focus is in two areas, meat goats and dairy goats. Separate competitions are conducted for each specialty. The Pickens 4-H Goat Club has enjoyed a very successful competition record for many years.

Horse Club

The Horse Club has been formed in response to many 4-Hers requesting the activity. It is our goal to teach our members how to care for a horse and how to handle a horse not just provide a riding experience. Once we have those skills, we will work on developing our relationship with horses and enjoying their unique capabilities. Trail rides will become a featured activity. Dues for this club are $25 for the 2010-2011 4-H year. Click on the horse to go to the Club page and see what we are doing for the next few meetings and for contacts if you are interested in becoming a 4-H member or volunteer.

Community Service

Community service is a very important aspect of the 4-H experience. Our members have developed a number of very popular community service events scheduled throughout the year. Community service helps create a sense of belonging and teaches compassion.  According to research, a sense of belonging may be the single most powerful ingredient in the lives of children & youth, and GA 4H provides accessible, safe and positive options for belonging.  Community service also helps young people learn that lives have meaning and purpose, and instills an attitude of generosity that helps them make life better for the world around them.

Local 4-H’ers have many opportunities to engage in Community Service right here in Pickens County.  We  help with Fishing Days for the Handicapped and Elderly, Happy Halloween Hollow pumpkin decorating competition, Landscaping for the Habitat for Humanity Houses, visiting elderly residents at nursing homes, and collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, just to name a few.

Our members continue to develop new projects as they identify new community opportunities.
