ABSOLUTE SUCCESS FOR PICKENS COUNTY 4-H
Pickens County 4-H had the honor of attending 4-H State Congress July 20-23. 4-Hers compete throughout the year on a district level in various project areas. Once they achieve 1st place at district this reserves them a chance to compete against other 4-Hers throughout the state at 4-H State Congress to decide who is the “Cream of the Crop”. Over 400 youth were honored at this prestigious event. Winning first place in their project areas back in March at District Project Achievement awarded three Pickens County 4-H’ers the opportunity to compete at the state level in July for the status of Master 4-H’er. I was proud to travel with this group of kids to the state competition. Participants Katie Archer-Textile, Merchandising & Interiors, Katherine Kirby-Food Safety & Preservation, and Amanda Rogers-Flowers, Shrubs & Lawns were up for the challenging week in Atlanta. Knowing that the competition would be stiff, these students worked throughout the summer freshening up on the delivery of their 12 minute speeches, making sure their visual aides were gathered and ready for presentation and preparing for the interview process. With these elements serving as only a portion of the competition, participants were also judged on their 4-H portfolios. These portfolios are a compilation of a years work, and serve as an overview of the many 4-H activities in which these students were involved during 2009. The portfolios outlined project work, citizenship activities, leadership activities, as well as all other extra-curricular activities.
With the excitement filling the air as the winners were announced, Pickens County
4-H’ers did exceptionally well, receiving a 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place. Katherine placed 1st, Katie placed 2nd and Amanda placed 3rd. Katherine will have the opportunity to travel to National Congress in November. Katie and Amanda will not give up and have already begun work to prepare for next year’s competition. Congratulations to these young ladies and good luck to Katie and Amanda next year!
