April Garden Tips
First Week
- Prune and fertilize azaleas, camellias and Rhododendrons just after flowering.
- Azaleas can be cut back to eight inches if necessary and bounce back in four to six weeks.
- Apply fertilizer to Bermuda and Zoysia lawns when the turf is 50 % green.
- Transplant houseplants that have outgrown their pots.
Second Week
- When preparing flowerbeds, break up and add soil conditioner.
- Plant warm season vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, melons and eggplants).
- Be careful in planting warm-season annuals.
- The last date of killing frost in Georgia is April 28
Third Week
- Remove suckers growing from dogwood, crabapple and other trees.
- Get ready to hang hummingbird feeders. Please don’t add coloring. ONLY one part sugar to four parts water. Clean and change weekly.
Fourth Week
- Treat for black spot on roses. Remove faded flowers from rhododendrons and trim back for more fullness next year.
- Remember,” the more you trim back at the proper time the bushier plants will be in a few weeks,” and they will thank you for it and provide more blooms later!
