February Garden Tips
First Week
- Continue feeding the birds.
- Spray dormant Bermuda grass lightly with Round up or Image to kill winter weeds, being sure not to spray green sprouts.
- Check for blooms on Lenten roses. A great ground cover to be planted this spring.
Second Week
- Water poinsettia, Christmas cactus and Amaryllis with ½ strength liquid 10-10-10 or similar. Prune pampas grass to 12 inches.
- Fertilize apple, pear, peach and pecan trees with one lb. 10-10-10 per inch of trunk, beyond the fall line.
Third Week
- Feed fescue with 3-4 lbs. of turf fertilizer per 1000 sq.ft.
- Spray apple, peach and pear with horticultural oil to prevent over wintering insects.
- Continue to feed pansies with Osmocote or 10-10-10 every two weeks.
- Continue deadheading pansies.
Fourth Week
- Keep your eye on houseplants. Use insecticidal soap to control most insects.
- Time to plant roses between now and March 15.
- Fertilize azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons with 10-10-10 or cottonseed meal.
- Don’t forget to water window boxes and container plants and the birds.
Fifth Week
- Plant a winter Daphne near your entrance for a great scent.
- A good time to prune hollies and most non-spring blooming shrubs while they are dormant.
- Now is the time to do severe pruning without the planting knowing. Once green up begins, it is too late. As a general rule, only 25 percent of a tree or shrub should be removed during the growing season. However, all heavy pruning is done during the dormant months of January, February and possibly early March, depending on warm up.
