July Garden Tips

First Week

  • Prune French Hydrangeas by one third when finished blooming.  They will quickly recover and make buds for next year.
  • Lace bugs can be a problem on azalea.  Spray the underside of leaves with horticultural oil.

Second Week

  • Water Camellias, Azaleas, and Rhododendrons regularly as they are forming next year's buds.
  • Plant Zinnia seeds.  They will bloom in a few weeks.

Third Week

  • Prune back long unsightly sprouts of almost anything that is out of bounds.

Fourth Week

  • Pinch tips of mums to shorten and make flowers more compct.
  • Fertilize Crepe Myrtles and Hydrangeas with 10-10-10.

Fifth Week

  • Water lawns one inch a week.  The best time is early morning before 10 AM.
  • Continue to keep vegetables picked to prevent overgrown fruits.

Enjoy the summer!
