Putnam County Cooperative Extension Office:
Lake Country Master Gardener Association (LCMGA)

September Garden Tips

First Week

  • Fertilize mums one more time for lots of blooms.
  • Pick bagworms from Junipers and Lelands.
  • Fertilize fescue.
  • Apply-pre-emergent to prevent Fall/winter weeds. Atrazine is a good one for all weeds, if you can find it.

Second Week

  • Prune and fertilize Hybrid Tea and Grandiflora roses.
  • Plant pansies. Use 10-10-10- liquid to get them off to a good start. Then granules every 6 weeks.

Third Week

  • Examine Birch, Willow, Cherry and Maple for fall webworms and destroy nests by pruning off the infested branches. Or just break up the nests. Birds will take care of the rest.
  • Plant new mums. Plant azaleas.
  • Cut iris back to 6 inches.

Fourth Week

  • Rake out and replace mulch under roses to prevent disease on next year’s growth.
  • Plant Fescue seed.
  • Plant ornamental grasses.
  • Use a winterizer fertilizer on Bermuda six weeks before the first frost.

Fifth Week

  • Transplant shrubs and peonies.
  • Fertilize Fescue if you haven't yet.
