Lake Country Master Gardener Association (LCMGA)

June Garden Tips

First Week

  • Feed Azaleas and Camellias if you haven’t done so. June is the month they set buds.
  • Keep plants mulched to conserve moisture.  Mulch should not touch plants.
  • Garden vegetables can still be planted.
  • Prune out growth shoots from figs.

Second Week

  • Root rose, azaleas or camellias in ½ sand ½ perlite.
  • Keep container grown plants watered.
  • You can still set out Dahlia tubers.
  • Lawn planting with hybrid Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine can be continued.

Third Week

  • Remove suckers from Crepe Myrtles.
  • Water lawns with 1 inch per week.
  • Prune hanging baskets to create denser growth and blooms.
  • Continue to pinch new growth of Mums until July 15th to have more compact plants and blooms.

Fourth Week

  • Plant shallots in the garden.
  • Check your mower settings for the optimum height, slightly higher. Continue to feed Roses until September.
  • Fertilize Bermuda and Zoysia.
  • Prune Hydrangeas as blooms fade.

Fifth Week

  • Keep an eye out for lacebugs, aphids, Japanese beetles, and flea beetles.  Fertilize flowerbeds with 10-10-10.
  • Cucumber, squash and field peas can be planted.
  • Transplant and divide Iris.
