UGA Cooperative Extension

Putnam County Cooperative Extension Office:
Lake Country Master Gardener Association (LCMGA)

November Garden Tips

First Week

  • Apply Atrazine to St. Augustine to control annual blue grass, chickweed, henbit and other annual weeds.
  • Still time to plant pansies.
  • Plant or divide perennials.
  • Shrubs and trees are still good to go.
  • Discontinue fertilizing house plants until April 1st.  They need a rest for the winter.

Second Week

  • Early frost has taken us into winter gardening.
  • Ideal time to continue shrub and tree planting.
  • Protect mums for continued color.
  • Still a good time to plant roses.
  • Plant peonies.
  • You can still plant onion sets.

Third Week

  • Hardy annual seeds can now be planted.
  • "Shirley Poppy" is an excellent pink carnation bloom.
  • Mulch and bag lawn clippings for the compost bin.
  • Dig and store tender bulbs in perlite.
  • Clean up all old stalks, diseased leaves and dead branches.

Fourth Week

  • Winterize your garden tools
  • This is a good time to plant fruit trees.
  • Fall bulb planting is in full swing.
  • Continue to plant shrubs, trees, field-grown roses and hardy annuals.

Hope you already have wood ready for that warm fire.  For more gardening information, contact your local county extension coordinator.
