What is UGA Extension?

The UGA Extension Office operates through a unique partnership with local county governments, the State of Georgia and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We translate the science of everyday living for farmers, families and communities to foster a healthy and prosperous Georgia.

For more than a century, we've provided research-based education through a network of committed specialists, agents and volunteers to help Georgians learn, grow and do more.

Program areas:

Agriculture & Natural Resources: our goal in Rockdale County is to assist and educate local farmers, businesses, homeowners, and gardeners with latest agriculture and horticulture information.  We provide soil and water testing, plant identification, plant disease diagnosis, insect identification and control, site visits, private and commercial pesticide licensing.

4-H Youth Development: Rockdale County's future leaders learn life skills through hands-on learning experiences. 4-H is considered one of the world's largest youth clubs offering today's youth from Kindergarten-12th grade a variety of programming to choose from both in-person and online.

Family & Consumer Sciences: provides education in the community on topics including: healthy eating and cooking, as well as ServSafe Managers Training Certifications, and Child Care Provider credit hours. Our Family and Consumer Science Agent also offers counseling and resources in health education, diabetic meal planning, and food safety.  Visit our Fun with Fresh Foods page for nutritious recipes and easy to follow videos.

  • Apr 24 ServSafe® University of Georgia Cooperative Extension/Gilmer County provides the nationally recognized and accredited ServSafe® training for food service professionals from the National Restaurant Association. Successful completion of the exam results in certification from NRAEF. This is a 1 day course.

  • Apr 25 - Apr 26 ServSafe Manager Certification Training and Exam - Thomas County Join us Thursday and Friday, April 25 & 26 for a two-day course and exam. This certification lasts for 5 years. Register by Friday, April 12th to receive the course materials.

  • Apr 25 Union/Towns Master Naturalist Program Series 1 The Master Naturalist Program covers natural resource topics such as native plants, invasive species, birds, tree ID, watershed management, mushrooms, pollinators and more. This Master Naturalist training is broken up into spring and fall series. To be a certified Master Naturalist, attendance in in both series is required. Classes will be on Thursdays. Cost is $150 for each series.

  • Apr 25 Backyard Gardening - Vegetables Interested in growing your own vegetables? Join us for this program! This will be best suited for beginner growers who want to dip their toe in the vegetable world. We will learn about different growing techniques, maintenance, and what to look out for. We will have a few different vegetable starts available for you to take home and grow yourself, as well as growing instructions/options specific to each vegetable. The program will be held on April 25, 2024, from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM at the Rockdale County Extension Office located at 1127 West Ave SW, Conyers, GA 30012. We hope to see you there!

Join us for our Rite Bite Cooking School, where you’ll discover a wealth of nutritious and delicious recipes tailored to help you manage or prevent diabetes. Learn practical cooking techniques and dietary strategies to support your journey toward optimal health. Full meal included.   • May 8 Lunch & Learn - Snakes of Georgia Snakes... chances are we have all seen them in our yards at some point. Come learn about these critters, which ones are found in Georgia, and what may be considered a good snake instead of a bad snake. For a provided lunch, a $10 registration is required by May 1, 2024. Please contact us to register! If you are bringing your own lunch, attendance is free.
