UGA Cooperative Extension
Rockdale County Extension Office:
4-H Youth Development
What is 4-H?
The Georgia 4-H program is part of the educational outreach of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. 4-H is the largest youth organization in the world.
Today, 4-H is urban and suburban as well as rural. The program teaches life skills such as public speaking. Although proud of its beginnings as corn and tomato clubs, 4-H has evolved over the years to teach about computers, recycling, photography, dog care, teamwork and many other topics relative to Rockdale County's youth.
Who's eligible to join 4-H?
Any youth aged 9 through 19 may join 4-H.
Where do 4-Her's meet?
Regular meetings are as follows:
- 5th graders meet once a month during school hours in their classroom.
- 6th - 8th graders meet once a month after school at their school.
- 9th - 12th graders meet once a month either at the 4-H office or at a local restaurant.
- Home School 4 - H meets every month, from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
- Lakeview Estates 4-H group meets during the summer.
- Horse Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.
How much does it cost to join 4-H?
There are no dues to participate in 4-H. However, special project clubs (horse club, etc.) and activities may have a small charge. There are no uniforms for 4-H'ers. 4-H'ers may pick and choose what activities they participate in.
4-H Project Achievement
4-H Project Achievement is a cornerstone in the Georgia 4-H program. Project Achievement helps youth develop skills in researching, assembling, and presenting information. Public speaking demonstrations begin at the Cloverleaf level in 5th grade classes, meeting several of the mandated Georgia Performance Standards.
