County History

Photo: Seminole County Irrigation MapSeminole County, created in 1920 from Decatur and Early counties, occupies the extreme southwest corner of the state of Georgia. The county seat of Donalsonville, incorporated in 1897, was named for John Earnest Donalson (1846-1920), a prominent resident of the area whose Irish ancestors pioneered in Decatur County.

The County was named for the Seminole Indians, part of the Muskhogean tribe that once occupied the lower Chattahoochee River Valley. Members of the Lower Creek Confederacy, the Seminoles (meaning "Separatist") left the main body of Georgia and Settled in Florida. After two bloody wars, 1817-1818 and 1835-1842, during which their chief, Osceola, was more than a match for the US Army, the majority were moved to western reservations, but several escaped to the Everglades.
