Horse Judging

  • Each spring the State 4-H Horse Judging contest is held in Perry, Georgia at the Agricenter. The contest is open to 4-H’ers from all over Georgia ages 9-19. Contestants judge eight classes, four conformation and four performance classes. In addition, they give two to four sets of reasons to justify their placings and explain their decisions.  4-H’ers not only learn the basics of judging and placing horses, they also learn the valuable life skills of decision making, critical thinking, organization, teamwork, competition, public speaking, and self confidence.
  • Top teams and individuals are recognized and awards are given.  The 1st place Senior team becomes Master 4-H’ers and win the right to represent Georgia at the National 4-H Horse Judging Contest in Louisville, Kentucky.  The second place team travels to the Southern Regional Horse Judging Contest.  Also the top five contestants earn the right to Compete at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio as the Georgia 4-H Composite team.

Poultry Judging

  • Competition
  • The poultry industry accounted for more than $3 billion of Georgia’s Farm Gate Value in 2003.  By participating in this event 4-H'ers learn how to judge live birds, broken out eggs, candled eggs and whole fryers based on the USDA grading system.  They will also learn parts identification.  At competition the 4-H'ers have to give reasons to a judge explaining their placing of the classes of live birds.  So if you would like to learn about potential career opportunities while having a great time, check it out.
