Tattnall County Extension Office:
Agriculture & Natural Resources
Tattnall County is one of the largest agricultural counties in Georgia with an annual farm income of over $275 million in 2007, ranking 6th in Georgia. It is a rural haven of natural resources in the center of Vidalia onion country. Tattnall County is home to over 1.5 million bushels of controlled atmospheric storage capacity that is farmer owned and operated, used for the storage of the famous Vidalia onion. Tattnall County is the largest producer of onions in Georgia with about 5,000 acres or 40% of the total.
In 2007, onions contributed $68 million in local farm income. The Vidalia onion is so important to this area that a celebration has been held in its honor for the past quarter century.
Another source of farmer income is Claxton Poultry. Broilers accounted for more than $15 million to Tattnall growers in 2007. Other vegetables, excluding onions, accounted for another $12 million.
