Adding the 'ag' to 'tourism'
Successful agritourism ventures, including 108 hometown farmers markets, can be found statewide. Nature-based tourism brought $50.9 million to Georgia' economy in 2008. Ag-based tourism added another $27.3 million, according to the UGA Georgia Farm Gate Value Report.

Autumn spiders
From big, fat barn spiders to their yellow garden cousins, between now and Halloween we will be seeing more spiders around our yards. The first hard frost will kill them, but now they are mating and producing egg sacs that will overwinter and re-establish the population next spring.

Flooding in Georgia
Natural disasters generally happen suddenly, leaving humans little time to prepare for their arrival. Recent flooding in northern Georgia has caused problems for parts of the state. In an effort to help our citizens recover, we provide valuable, and possibly life-saving, information on floods and other natural disasters.

Georgia's organic produce acreage is growing
Of the more than 170,000 acres of Georgia farmland devoted to growing vegetables, only 3,000 acres are dedicated to growing organic produce. The numbers are small, but these producers are finding demand is high in their niche market.

Holiday plants best for looking pretty, not eating
Ornamental peppers can brighten up a home or garden for the holidays, but watch out for children who might be tempted to give these peppers a taste. Some varieties can be blazing hot to the taste buds, says University of Georgia horticulturist Paul Thomas.

UGA spotlights education at Sunbelt Expo
Visitors to the 32nd annual Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition learned about the latest agricultural equipment, technology and information firsthand Oct. 20-22. They also got to watch college deans go udder-to-udder in a milking contest and witness the unexpected birth of baby roaches.

UGA student awarded for entomology
Cheri Abraham, a first-year Ph.D. student, won the Larry Larson Graduate Student Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology. Abraham is conducting his research with Kris Braman, professor of entomology.
