UGA Extension announces summer camps for military youths

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is offering a variety of summer camps geared specifically toward military youths.

These camps are part of UGA Extension’s Military Outreach program and are offered at little to no cost to dependents of U.S. military members between the ages of 14 and 18. The registration deadline for all of the camps is May 1, 2016.

The 2016 camps, dates and locations are as follows:

  • Florida Water Adventure Camp will be held June 13-24 at Florida state parks.
  • The Joint Reserve Component Teen Leadership Summit will be held June 19-24 at Wahsega 4-H Center in Dahlonega, Georgia.
  • The Air Force Reserve/Air National Guard Teen Leadership Summit will be held July 17-22 at Wahsega 4-H Center in Dahlonega, Georgia.
  • The Air Force Reserve/Air National Guard Adventure Teen Leadership Summit will be held Aug. 9-14 at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, Colorado.

A one-year gap in access to WIC can have a significantly negative effect on the quality of some 5-year-olds’ diets. A new study from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences found that when children age out of WIC after their fifth birthday, many families are left without food assistance support for up to a year. Until the child enters kindergarten, the nutritional quality of their diet takes about a 20% hit, according to the study.

Mental Health Day at the Georgia State Capitol will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Jan. 31, to raise awareness of mental health issues and allow mental health advocates to share their insights with lawmakers. The event is an opportunity to increase awareness about mental health and health services, especially for those in rural areas, according to University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent Jennifer Dunn.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agents throughout the state have been hard at work improving health in their communities through the Well Connected Communities program. A nationwide initiative developed by the Cooperative Extension System and the National 4-H Council, Well Connected Communities is designed to identify and address systemic health inequities at the local level.

Competitors at the Georgia 4-H State Horse Show reined in the awards at the Georgia National Fair Grounds in Perry. Held from June 7 to 11, the event welcomed 129 contestants who competed in five main disciplines including stock seat, ranch horse, hunt seat, saddle seat and contest events. The theme of the 2022 show was “Stirrup the Fun.”
