Watermelons

What would summer be like without watermelons? For picnics, cook-outs, pool parties and any other fun time summer event. The cool, sweet, juicy taste of fresh watermelon adds enjoyment to any occasion. Watermelons are low in calories, fat-free, and a good source of Vitamins A and C.

Most of us grew up enjoying simple slices of this hydrating summer treat, but watermelons can also become a part of more refined taste treats such as salsa, salad dressings and even muffins.

A south Georgia city, Cordele, claims to be the "Watermelon Capital of the World" because so many melons travel through the state farmers' market there.

Georgia ranks second in total value from watermelon production. In 2001 watermelon production was valued at $80.6 million.
