UGA Tifton to hold student recruitment event Sept. 23

University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ students train for careers in food, plant or animal industries, and they get to work directly with the world-renowned scientists who teach them.

The college will showcase its academic programs at its annual Southwest District Recruitment Event Sept. 23 at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center in Tifton, Ga. It starts at 5 p.m.

“These prospective students are here to learn about the next big step in their lives, where they will attend college and what they will study,” said Joe West, the UGA Tifton assistant dean. “So it is exciting to witness their enthusiasm and to know that in this group of young people there will be future business owners, educators, scientists, and the future leaders for our state and country.”

When compared to graduates from other UGA colleges, West said, fewer CAES students are still seeking employment six months after graduation, and their starting salaries are the second highest among UGA graduates.

Representatives from all 10 CAES departments will be on hand to answer questions from prospective students and their parents. Topics will include admissions, financial aid and information about the college and its different majors and campuses.

Students and parents just need to bring an open mind and a lot of questions, said Erin Womack, the UGA Tifton academic program coordinator.

CAES students can expect small class sizes, one-on-one faculty advising and exposure to world-renowned research starting at the undergraduate level. They can’t get all of this from any other school, Womack said.

“We want the students who come to the event to visit with our scientists in attendance and learn about the many opportunities available to them in the field of agriculture, to meet some of the scientists who will be their teachers and to gain a better understanding of how an education from the UGA CAES will prepare them for exciting opportunities in the field of agriculture and related industries” West said.

UGA horticulture class shows students the science behind herbal remedies 04/16/24 Sameeka Prabath Rajamani
The field of medicine is ever-changing, and the use of herbal medicines may play a bigger role in health care as the value of natural remedies gain recognition in the Western world. Students at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are delving into the field of medicinal remedies through the class “Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants.” Offered to undergraduate students through the Department of Horticulture, the class helps students develop a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and health.
2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate who went on to earn a master’s degree in 1982 and education specialist degree in 1984 from UGA’s College of Education. An innovator in peanut breeding whose research revitalized an industry and an ardent champion of agricultural education were inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame at the 68th University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association Awards in Athens. The 2024 honorees are William D. Growers hopeful 2024 peach season will rebound from disastrous 2023 04/10/24 Emily Cabrera
Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.

Wheat breeders spend years meticulously crossing varieties to coax the best traits out of each species, carefully propagating plant varieties that are healthier, heartier and better suited for the environments where they are grown. Brewmasters are equally painstaking when choosing the components that will give their beers a specific flavor profile. These two exacting professions came together this spring when Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. reached out to the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to find a sustainable wheat variety they could use to make a good beer for a great cause.

Flavor of Georgia grand prize goes to New Creation Soda Works 04/05/24 Jordan Powers
New Creation Soda Works won the grand prize at the 2024 Flavor of Georgia food contest for their product, PECHES Georgia Peach Soda. A family-owned company based in Bishop, Georgia, New Creation Soda Works started selling their soda syrups at a local farmer’s market in 2015. Today, their product line — comprised of sodas with flavors including strawberry habanero, butter pecan cream soda and the old-time root beer that inspired the company — sells in more than 700 locations nationwide.

UGA Extension protects family farms and sensitive species 04/04/24 Emily Cabrera
Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.
