EDGE Expo urban agriculture conference set at Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center

The Georgia Urban Ag Council will host the third annual EDGE Expo for landscape professionals on Dec. 11-12 at the Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center in Duluth, Ga.

The expo is designed to educate green industry professionals by providing updates on the industry, demonstrations of the latest timesaving equipment, opportunities to network and presentations on the latest research from university scientists.

Industry experts and researchers from across the Southeast will share the latest information on everything from landscape management to tips on how to work smarter next spring.

Researchers from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will present workshops on the most common beneficial and pest insects found in Georgia landscapes, how to identify and treat plant diseases, chemical control of common landscape weeds, identifying plant stressors, the latest turfgrass research, building healthy soil and much more.

Experts from Chattahoochee Technical College and North Carolina State University will share their knowledge, too, along with landscape company owners and marketing specialists.

This year’s expo also includes presentations from local, national and consulting experts in Wednesday’s Visionary Views session. The day begins with an informal networking session and continues with data from a “Lawn and Landscape” magazine survey, the latest on the housing market and tips on how to market green industry products and services.

Training for Georgia’s pesticide applicator’s general standards and Category 24 (ornamentals and turf) will be available on Dec. 11, and the exam will be given the morning of Dec. 12.

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers, Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, Georgia Certified Plant Professional, Golf Course Superintendent Association of America, the International Society of Arboriculture, the Irrigation Association, Planet Landscape Industry and Sports Turf Management Association are offering continuing education credits for those who attend the expo.

Registration for the expo is $145 for Georgia Urban Ag Council members before Nov. 25 and $175 after. For nonmembers, the cost is $175 for both days before Nov. 25 and $205 after.

One-day fees for members are $95 for Wednesday, which includes lunch, and $55 for Thursday. Nonmembers pay $125 for Wednesday only, and $75 for Thursday only. After Nov. 25, these fees go up $30.

A highlight of the expo is the tradeshow, where landscape-related companies and associations will show off their latest products. The trade show is set for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Dec. 11.

The fee to attend the trade show and luncheon only on Wednesday is $20 for both Urban Ag Council members and nonmembers. There is no charge to only attend the trade show.

An innovator in peanut breeding whose research revitalized an industry and an ardent champion of agricultural education were inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame at the 68th University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association Awards in Athens. The 2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate.

Wheat breeders spend years meticulously crossing varieties to coax the best traits out of each species, carefully propagating plant varieties that are healthier, heartier and better suited for the environments where they are grown. Brewmasters are equally painstaking when choosing the components that will give their beers a specific flavor profile. These two exacting professions came together this spring when Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. reached out to the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to find a sustainable wheat variety they could use to make a good beer for a great cause.

UGA Extension protects family farms and sensitive species 04/04/24 Emily Cabrera

Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.

The Research Awards Program is sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF). Awards are given annually to honor outstanding faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and to recognize excellence in UGA research, scholarly creativity, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Award winners are selected by accomplished faculty peers who give their time and energy to help honor well-deserving researchers at UGA.

UGA to recognize groundbreaking achievements at 2024 Research Awards 04/02/24

As the spring semester starts winding down, the University of Georgia’s annual Honors Week marks a time to celebrate exceptional performance in the classroom, in the service arena and in research, as faculty and graduate students are recognized for their contributions to scientific discovery. Celebrating its 45th year, UGA’s Research Awards banquet and ceremony, set for April 4, will pay tribute to those who have made groundbreaking strides in their respective fields through research, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

A seldom recognized and underappreciated benefit of community clean-up programs is the permanent elimination of larval mosquito habitats. Some of the most common mosquito pests around the world develop in the containers, litter, debris and used tires that are commonly collected during a clean-up event.

These events can be organized by citizens, civic groups or local governments and often have a theme or targeted area in a town or community. Clean-up events provide many benefits to a community including raising the awareness of litter prevention, developing pride in our communities and restoring the natural environment.

Five professors named Senior Members of National Academy of Inventors 03/06/24 Brandon Ward

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has selected five University of Georgia researchers as 2024 NAI Senior Members, the largest single induction for the university in its history. UGA now has 16 Senior Members overall. NAI Senior Members recognize faculty, scientists, and administrators for their ability to innovate and commercialize new technologies. UGA’s 2024 inductees are Elizabeth Brisbois, David Crich, Qingguo “Jack” Huang, Paul Raymer, and Ralph Tripp.
