UGA sets pesticide applicator recertification classes for February

Certified pesticide applicators need recertification training and credits to keep their licenses up-to-date. To help provide this training, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension has planned pesticide applicator recertification classes in Savannah, Griffin and Cartersville this February.

The Savannah class is set for Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens on Canebrake Road in Savannah. The registration fee is $50 and rises to $60 after Feb. 4.

The Griffin class will be held Feb. 18 on the UGA campus on Experiment Street in Griffin, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Cartersville class, also set for Feb. 18, will be held by web conference at the Bartow County Extension Office on West Cherokee Ave. in Cartersville from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The registration fee for the Griffin and Cartersville classes is $50 and rises to $60 after Feb. 10.

The topics vary slightly at each location but will include an introduction to invasive pests, integrated pest management, understanding and preventing resistance to pesticides, getting the most from pesticide labels, recent changes in pesticide regulations and UGA resources available for use in managing pests.

Certified applicators can earn five hours of Georgia Commercial Pesticide Credit for attending a class. This credit can be divided over categories 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, 32, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 41. Private applicators can earn up to two credit hours.

Experts from UGA Extension, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Arrow Exterminators will teach the classes.

The field of medicine is ever-changing, and the use of herbal medicines may play a bigger role in health care as the value of natural remedies gain recognition in the Western world. Students at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are delving into the field of medicinal remedies through the class “Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants.” Offered to undergraduate students through the Department of Horticulture, the class helps students develop a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and health.

Growers hopeful 2024 peach season will rebound from disastrous 2023 04/10/24 Emily Cabrera
Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.
