UGA workshop will help small growers and potential growers

UGA Extension will present a workshop for beginning small farmers on March 14 on the Central Georgia Technical College campus in Milledgeville.

The workshop is designed for small farmers who want to improve their operations and large-scale home gardeners who are deciding whether or not to sell their products at a farmers market, roadside stand or to individuals.

Group effort

UGA Extension agents from Bibb, Bleckley, Houston, Laurens, Peach, Putnam, Taylor and Twiggs counties, along with industry professionals, will teach the “Small Farming: Where to Begin” class.

Several topics will be covered including recordkeeping, funding and resources, profitable marketing, grazing systems, poultry, vegetables, beekeeping, pecans, organic methods and sustainable agriculture.

The workshop is designed for beginning growers who would like to sell their produce at a farmers market, roadside stand or to individuals.

The program will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The cost is $25, which includes program materials and lunch. The registration fee increases to $40 after Feb. 28.

Wheat breeders spend years meticulously crossing varieties to coax the best traits out of each species, carefully propagating plant varieties that are healthier, heartier and better suited for the environments where they are grown. Brewmasters are equally painstaking when choosing the components that will give their beers a specific flavor profile. These two exacting professions came together this spring when Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. reached out to the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to find a sustainable wheat variety they could use to make a good beer for a great cause.

Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.

Jim Gratzek, director of the University of Georgia’s Food Product Innovation and Commercialization Center, earned his doctorate in food process engineering from UGA’s Department of Food Science and Technology. He returned to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 2022 after nearly 30 years in the commercial food industry, bringing a new perspective. In his experience, the biggest hurdle for new food entrepreneurs who don’t yet have sufficient working capital or manufacturing facilities is moving a product from concept to consumer.

From beetles to butterflies, pollinators are a beautiful and integral part of nature. However, these tiny creatures may be more economically important to agricultural and ecological systems than previously thought. In a recent project by the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development at the University of Georgia, economist Sharon Kane and plant protection expert Becky Griffin have put together a powerful map displaying the economic importance of pollinators across Georgia.
