Family cooking class focuses on healthy meals for less than $10

While summer may mean more relaxed schedules, later bedtimes and little more time to spend on weeknight suppers, but the new school year will be here soon.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension experts have great ideas on how to prepare healthy, family-pleasing meals on a budget. These ideas will be shared during a cooking class for busy families set for July 18 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.

Heard County Extension agent Dinah Rowe will lead the class and offer tips for breaking out of the fast food routine. In addition to saving money, there are also health benefits. As chef, you can monitor ingredients and portion size. Cooking budget-friendly meals also creates valuable opportunities for you and your family to spend quality time together.

Rowe will discuss the benefits of cooking and eating at home and will offer recipes family's will enjoy and that can be made for less than $10. Fruits and vegetables harvested straight from the Rock Eagle garden will be used in the class. Participants should come hungry as the class will taste delicious, home-cooked treats.

This class is appropiate for all ages and the cost is $5 per person. This program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Participants can visit Rock Eagle’s Natural History Museum following the class. Advanced registration is required and space is limited.

The staff at Rock Eagle 4-H Center offer family enrichment classes each month through the Saturday at the Rock Program. From canoeing to backyard poultry basics, the classes tackle a different topic every month, except for December.
