Canoe adventures and other pioneer skills at October's Saturday @ The Rock By Jessica Cameron Torhan

Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia, invites families to spend the day canoeing and brushing up on their pioneer skills during a special installment of Saturday @ the Rock.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the center will offer two adventures for the price of one. Families can start the day by exploring Rock Eagle Lake by canoe and then travel back in time to experience life in a pioneer’s shoes.

Rock Eagle Lake’s picturesque scenery provides the perfect opportunity to see ospreys, turtles, fish and other exciting wildlife. Whether you are a novice looking to learn how to properly paddle or a veteran craving a relaxed morning on the water, Rock Eagle’s staff will be on hand to provide all the needed equipment and instruction.

Next, participants are invited to roll their sleeves up to work on the early 1900s-era homestead.

Rock Eagle’s costumed guides will lead a tour of the historic Scott Site, including the saddlebag farmhouse, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, chicken coop, outhouse and gardens. This is a chance to use tools from the turn of the century, experience what life was like as a pioneer and learn about the family that once called Rock Eagle home. After exploring the living site, families have the opportunity to sit around the campfire for storytelling and warm, cast iron skillet-baked cornbread.

Admission is $5 per person. Canoeing will run from 3-5 p.m. and pioneer life will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Participants may attend one or both sessions. Guests may also visit Rock Eagle’s Natural History Museum preceding the activity. Advanced registration is required.

For more information or to register, please contact Jessica Torhan at (706) 484-4838 or by email at jtorhan1@uga.edu. Different Saturday at the Rock programs take place each month, excluding December. A complete list of sessions is online at rockeagle4h.org/ee/community/SaturdayattheRock.html.
