Athens workshop designed to help new food business owners

A two-day workshop led by University of Georgia and industry experts is designed to help food entrepreneurs start new food businesses.

The workshop is set for April 8-9 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Food Science Building on the UGA campus in Athens. Instructors include UGA Department of Food Science & Technology faculty and representatives from the National Center for Home Food Preservation, Georgia Department of Agriculture and FDA.

The course will cover food safety and sanitation, label approval, meeting GDA and FDA regulations, product testing for safety, proper canning/bottling techniques, recordkeeping and product recalls and choosing a co-packer or shared kitchen.

The workshop will conclude with a panel discussion where questions about the challenges in starting, running and growing a food business in Georgia will be answered.

Registration is $200 and includes instruction, materials, lunches and refreshment breaks.
