Making Life Better
McLocklin's family tree bleeds red and black
Rachel McLocklin didn't have to consider any options when it came to selecting an institution for higher education. Her fate was predetermined.
"There was absolutely no other choice," McLocklin said. "I have always wanted to attend UGA."
Her parents are UGA graduates and their parents are UGA graduates. Her cousins, aunts and uncles share the alma mater, too.
"The Atlanta paper ran a front page article about my grandfather's family because it was so unusual for a farming family from a rural town to send all seven of their children to college in the 1930s and 1940s," she said. "The University of Georgia really runs in my blood, and it was the only place I applied."

Q&A with Rachel
How many times have you changed your major? What made you settle on your current major?
I have changed my major once, from Animal Science to Agricultural Economics. I decided on Ag Econ because I thought that was a better major for the route I wanted to take in life. Also, my father majored in Ag Econ here at UGA.
What exposure did you have to agriculture before coming to CAES?
I was raised on a beef cattle farm my entire life. I was raised to have such an appreciation for agriculture and what it truly means.
What's your favorite class and why?
My favorite class would probably have to be the animal science practicum that I took as an animal science major. We went out to different farms every week and got a lot of hands on experience.
What's the most important thing you've learned this year?
To always stay on top of things and go to class, even when you don't feel like it.
What's one thing you're always sure to take to class?
My laptop.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully in my last year of law school, but who knows what I might end up doing.
What's the coolest thing that's happened to you at UGA?
Experiencing football games in the student section. It is something no one could ever forget.
What's your favorite thing to do outside class?
Get involved in lots of extracurricular activities.
What would be your best advice for incoming freshmen?
Go to class, because it is a lot harder to catch up than you think.
