Web Team: Contribute Resource Guide

Housekeeping Tips

For content managers who are creating a Web site using starter pages provided by the Web Team, it is important to be sure that you do a few “housekeeping” items before you begin editing and adding content in earnest. These starter pages may have content and information that is generic and not necessarily relevant to your site needs. Be sure that you edit the items below before you go further with your site, and always double check that these things are correct on any page that you edit.

Housekeeping is important because:

  • You may forget about updating information, such as page title, links, email, etc.
  • It might be hard to distinguish the page you are working on from other drafts later.
  • You will have updated information on a page if you decide to make a copy of it.

Change your page title

  1. Go to the Page Properties box.
  2. Change the generic portion of the title to the name of your county or office.
For these starter pages, the included descriptions may work well, but as you add pages, you will want to make sure you have some additional information to distinguish each page from other pages.

Replace instances of the same text

Replace all generic text with the appropriate information for your site. For instance, if the template reads “Sample Office”, replace this with the name of your office. Be sure that you correct all generic text on all sample pages. These are most often in the page title, page headings, and local navigation. You may also find generic contact information that should be edited.

Edit Provided Content

On every sample page that you edit, be sure to edit any text provided to you. Sample pages often have an outline of what kinds of information you might include on a page. These are suggestions to help you get your site content started. If there are items that don’t apply to your site, delete them. If you decide to edit the local navigation, please contact the Contribute Help Desk at contrib@uga.edu for guidance.

Update the page footer

Each starter page has generic footer information and a contact email address. Some of the links in the footer area are editable and may be deleted. Links to UGA, CAES, FACS, and accessibility information are not editable.

Every Web site must have contact information for the Web content manager. For starter pages, this is typically “Questions, feedback? Email: sample.email@uga.edu.” Be sure that this email is edited to contact your Web content manager.
