Web Team: Contribute Resource Guide

Naming Your Files

There are two 'names' involved with each page within your Web site: the Page Title and the Filename.

Page Title

The Page Title is the informative name you give your pages which appear in both Contribute’s title bar and your browser’s title bar (blue bar at top of document window) when the page is viewed. It is important to have unique page titles since this helps distinguish one page from another. Page titles are also a necessary element for internet searching – this is the text that shows up as a link in search results.

Note: Informative, concise page titles help your user know where they are in your site and the main idea of the page. A general rule for writing page titles would be to include the most descriptive, local information first, followed by more general or contextual information.

For instance, a page on soil testing for Spalding County might read:

Soil Testing | Spalding County Extension Office | CAES | UGA or
Spalding County Soil Testing | UGA Cooperative Extension

Page titles are initially assigned when you create a new page or can be edited using the Page Properties.

Assigning a page title to a new page:

When you create a new page, you will be given an opportunity to enter a descriptive page title. If you do not know what to call your new page, be sure to come back and edit this information in page properties.

To change the page title with page properties:

  1. Browse to the page where you want to edit the Page Title. Then click the Edit Page button in the toolbar.
  2. Click the Page Properties button in the toolbar or select Format > Page Properties. The Page Properties dialog box appears.
  3. Change the Page Title listed for the page. For information about the other options, click the Help button in the dialog box.
  4. Click Apply to see changes without closing the dialog box or click OK to apply changes and close the dialog box.

Note: If Page Properties are unavailable, see your site administrator. You should not change any other items under Page Properties.

Filename

The second ‘name’ is the Filename or the name you give all new pages that you publish and store on the server. This name must also be unique, but can be much simpler and shorter than the page title as shown in the table.

Page Title ExampleCorresponding File Name Example
News & Events at Spalding Countynews.html
Programs & Projects | CAES Research | UGAprograms.html
Student Services | Academics at CAES | UGAservices.html

When you create a new page, link to it from another page within your site, and publish both pages, Contribute automatically assigns your page title as your filename. Since this can be descriptive and long, you should shorten the filename through the Publish New Page Dialog box.
