Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics & Genomics
New Web site released
The Institute for Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics has been approved by the University of Georgia as an interdepartmental organization to coordinate and enhance the various plant improvement research efforts for the college. The Institute will offer MS and PhD programs in Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics.

Retirements
OC personnel changes
Dan Rahn retired from the Office of Communications on December 1, 2007, after 24 years with the college. A public service associate on the public affairs team, Dan wrote many news stories on CAES faculty and staff for print media. Today, he is enjoying retirement with his family, especially Jordan his granddaughter, in Rocky Ford, GA.
After 30 years with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Carol Williamson retired on December 1, 2007. A graphic artist, Carol created and designed printed materials, exhibits, illustrations that promoted the college in an informative and attractive manner. Carol is now working with her husband in his frame shop in Winterville and doing consulting work in the graphics field.

New Employees
Public Affairs Coordinator
April Sorrow, a CAES Ag Communications graduate, joins OC after spending more than five years as a reporter and photographer with Main Street Newspapers. She will be writing news stories for Georgia FACES and other publications, and is the media representative for the Southeast Extension district.
Senior Graphic Designers
Cindy Allen, a UGA graphic design graduate, joins OC after spending more than 12 years as a freelance designer. Prior to running her solo design shop, she managed the design staff for the Office of Creative Services at Georgia State University. She is the designer for Southscapes magazine as well as other print publications and exhibits.
Angela Rowell, a graduate of the College of Design at NC State, joins the creative team in OC after freelancing for three years in Jackson Hole, WY. Prior to her "vacation" to WY, Angela was a designer for Duke University Health System in Durham, NC.

Communication Awards
OC shines in spring awards
Stephanie Schupska, public relations coordinator, Carol Williamson, retired graphic artist, both in the Office of Communications and Casey Mull, state military coordinator, Georgia 4-H were selected as state winners for their entry in the 2008 NAE4HA Communicator Award Division for promotional piece - team. With the win, their brochure, Operation: Military Kids Annual Report, moved on to regional judging and won top honors at this level as well. The state award will be presented in May at the annual GAE4-HA meeting in Savannah. For more information on this program, visit the Georgia Operation: Military Kids Web site.
In the international Association of Communication Excellence's Critique & Awards program, Faith Peppers won the bronze award for magazine writing for "A Two-Step Fervor," a feature story on Steve Stice that ran in UGA's Outreach Magazine - Winter 2008 (pdf). Faith along with UGA Public Affairs' Sam Fahmy and Lindsey Robinson won the silver award in media campaigns for a media kit promoting Steve to national media as a leading expert on embryonic stem cell research. And, Faith won the silver award for diversity for a year-long body of work with Steve to call public attention to the plight of those suffering with spinal cord injuries and debilitation diseases and the hope stem cell research offers for treatments and cures. The awards will be presented at the organization's annual international conference in June.
