Check Soil Conditions in Spring Garden Sites
Make sure the soil in your spring garden site is ready before digging around with a spade or tiller. Pick up some dirt in your hands and form it into a ball. If the soil glistens, or remains in one solid clod, it's too wet to be worked. If the soil becomes like a powder in your hands, it's too dry.
When it comes to fertilizer, refer to results from soil samples you collected.

Fighting Herbicide Resistant Pigweed
Pigweed is becoming resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. This makes them more difficult to control in cotton, and some soybeans.
To fight pigweed, you need the help of a good pre-plant, and pre-emergence herbicide program. Once glyphosate resistant pigweed emerges from the soil, control becomes extremely difficult.
The weeds can then take over a field, costing you money and yields.

New 4-H Ice Cream Arrives in Georgia
A new flavor of 4-H ice cream will help you keep cool this spring. The new flavor is called Centennial Cupcake in honor of more than 100 years of 4-H. It features a tasty cake batter ice cream with pieces of yellow cake, a chocolate icing swirl, and four-leaf clover sprinkles.
This also allows you and others throughout Georgia to support 4-H, since a portion of the sales will help promote 4-H educational programs.

Plan Now for the 2008 Canning Season
Now is the time to prepare for the upcoming canning season. Make sure dial gauges on pressure canners are tested for accuracy before the canning season. Pressure canners and boiling water canners should both have a rack in the bottom used to keep jars off the bottom of the canner.
Canning jars should be checked every year for nicks, cracks, or chips. Pay close attention to the condition of the top sealing edge.

Discuss Finances Before Marriage
Getting ready to tie the knot and say "I Do" this spring or summer? Don't forget to tie in your finances. Start discussing finances long before that wedding day. Couples should decide how they want to handle their banking relationships. Once they decide what kind of accounts they want, they should shop around for a bank. Newlyweds should also be aware of any debt incurred by either party before the wedding.

Summer Garden Site Clean-up
Does spring and warmer weather make your green thumb itch for action? Scratch the itch by getting ready for that 2007 summer garden. Remove litter and other trash left over from previous gardens. Add compost and soil amendments like cow manure. Once the amendments settle, take a soil sample from that garden site. Make sure you can provide water to that garden site.

Think Before Planting More Corn
Does higher market prices for corn and soybeans have you thinking more dollar bills? Do some homework before planting more corn in 2007. Make sure you have labor and machines available to harvest a larger crop this fall. Check and see if you have plenty of grain bins that can store and dry corn and soybeans after harvest. Go ahead and secure agreements with local grain elevators for selling corn and soybeans.
