Public Service Announcements — Summer

2008 — Released June 3, 2008

On the Road with Summer 4-H

A lot of Georgia 4-H'ers will keep their suitcases packed this summer.

Several 4-H'ers will travel to Puerto Rico on an environmental expedition. Others will visit Kentucky and North Carolina to take part in several 4-H activities.

Summer is also the 4-H camping season. 4-H'ers will beat the heat by taking part in 4-H camping activities at five 4-H centers across the state.

Summer Farm Fuel Efficiency

Take some of the heat out of fuel prices this summer. Make sure the engine on a tractor has been properly tuned. Include a regular check on air, fuel, and oil filters. Keeping them changed or cleaned will help improve fuel efficiency.

When working in fields, reduce engine rpm whenever possible to conserve fuel.

Summer Problems in Home Gardens

Several problems could turn up the heat in your summer garden.

Applying too much high nitrogen fertilizer could cause fertilizer burn. Make sure the plants are watered thoroughly after fertilizer applications.

Plants could also get infected with tomato spotted wilt virus, or cucumber mosaic virus. Symptoms include plants that are distorted, or gnarled. The only solution is to remove infected plants, and destroy them.

Teaching Children Money Management

Children need to learn money management skills at an early age.

The first step is to set a good example. Save regularly and shop wisely.

No matter what age, help your child develop a savings habit. Teach your child to save a portion of any money they receive. The earlier saving becomes a habit, the easier it is to stick to it as an adult.

4-H'ers work hard and stay busy during the summer. They load buses and travel to 4-H camps across the state. 4-H camps are located at Jekyll Island, Tybee Island, Dahlonega, Hampton, and Rock Eagle. Each day includes activities that allow 4-H'ers from the fifth through eleventh grade to have fun. They also go on tours and learn about historic sites in the area.

Preventing Center Pivot Shock

That hard-working center pivot irrigation system could give you quite a shock this summer. Many systems may have worn parts around the motor, control box, or generator. This could set the stage for a serious electrical injury.

To prevent electrical accidents, make sure ground wires and terminals are in good condition, and properly installed. Clear away tall weeds around the control box.

Summer Salad Safety

Cold foods and salads are a popular way to cool off during the summer. Make sure the foods are handled safely, to reduce the chances of getting sick with a foodborne illness.

Materials used to prepare a cold salad should be pre-chilled to forty degrees fahrenheit, or lower. Make sure foods that have to be cooked for a salad are cooked thoroughly.

Weed Control in Summer Gardens

The latest drought is wilting away efforts to produce a good summer garden. But dry weather won’t stop weeds from moving in.

Weeds like pigweed, crabgrass, and nutsedge are drought tolerant.

Attack these weeds while they are young, so they will be easier to control. When treating with herbicides, make sure the chemical is labeled for the specific vegetable it is being applied to.

Dealing with High Fertilizer Prices

High fertilizer prices will hit farm budgets hard this year. Nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium are leading the price increases. With these higher prices, soil testing becomes even more critical. These results will let you know the specific fertilizer needs in your fields. So you can apply only the fertilizer products that are needed.

Summer Picnic Food Safety

Don't let a summer picnic or barbecue leave you with a sick feeling. Make sure you handle the foods safely. Keep hot foods above 140 degrees fahrenheit, and cold foods below forty degrees fahrenheit. Take two coolers if possible, one for perishable foods and the other one for snacks and drinks. When checking the temperature of hamburger and other meats, use a calibrated food thermometer.

Watering Gardens During Dry Weather

Home gardeners can give thirsty plants a good drink of water during dry weather. It's important to keep water near the root zone of garden plants. This works best when using a drip irrigation system, or soaker hoses. You also conserve water, and keep the foliage dry. Keeping the leaves dry could help reduce pressure from several diseases. Apply enough water to soak five or six inches deep into the soil.
