Ornamental pruning classes set for UGA campus in Griffin

Learn how to properly prune ornamentals at upcoming University of Georgia classes offered on the campus in Griffin.

The one-day course will be offered Feb. 27 and March 6 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Student Learning Center on the UGA Griffin Campus.

The class will cover all aspects of pruning ornamental plants and will briefly cover how to prune fruit trees. Participants will also learn what equipment to use; how to care for equipment; when, where and how to prune certain plants; and techniques for creating a professional-looking landscape. Participants will also learn pest prevention through pruning.

Taught by UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences horticulturists Bodie Pennisi and Bob Westerfield, the class will consist of both indoor lectures and outside, hands-on demonstrations. Participants are reminded to dress for the weather in preparation for the outdoor session.

The cost of the course is $59, which includes lunch and break refreshments. Pre-registration is required; call (770) 228-7214.

On a stormy day in September 2009, a crew of Central Fulton Master Gardeners were nearly knee-deep in mud, installing landscaping on their first house for a partnership with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. It was not how anyone envisioned the project kick-off. More than 14 years later, CFMG has maintained its commitment to the organization, completing its 500th Habitat project — a fitting milestone as the national Extension Master Gardener program celebrates its golden jubilee this year.

This warning — and more importantly, the research efforts in place to make change — were highlighted in Edward Buckler’s keynote address at the 2023 D.W. University of Georgia researchers in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the College of Engineering are wrapping up the final year of a study to develop improved, cost-effective treatment systems with advanced technologies for removing polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances from water, wastewater and biosolids. The team was awarded nearly $1.6 million through a congressionally mandated grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to mitigate PFAS.
