J. Phil Campbell corn boil and sustainable agriculture field day set for June 28

The University of Georgia faculty and staff at the J. Phil Campbell Sr. Research and Education Center in Watkinsville will host the center’s annual corn boil and open house on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Every year the center grows acres of sweet corn as part of a sustainable farming research project. During harvest, the center invites the public to partake in the fruits of their effort and learn about the work that is being done at the center.

Guided farm tours, which are free and open to the public, will run from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Attendees will learn about solar pumps for livestock water troughs, rainfall simulation and erosion, satellite guided tractors, living mulch systems and cover crops.

Lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m. and include corn, hot dogs and accompaniments. Attendees should park at 1420 Experiment Station Road for lunch and for tour shuttles.

After the U.S. Department of Agriculture closed the J. Phil Campbell Sr. Natural Resource Conservation Center in August 2012, UGA took over management of the facility.

It has since become a hub for researchers across disciplines to study ways to make farming more sustainable.

The center’s fields, pastures and labs allow UGA faculty to continue research into sustainable agriculture and natural resources conservation. It currently houses about 30 ongoing UGA research projects on sustainable farming systems, nutrient cycling, water quality, organic production, livestock grazing systems, forage breeding and variety trials.

The Campbell Center also serves as a center for hands-on education through the office for UGA Cooperative Extension in Oconee County.

Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate.

Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.

Wheat breeders spend years meticulously crossing varieties to coax the best traits out of each species, carefully propagating plant varieties that are healthier, heartier and better suited for the environments where they are grown. Brewmasters are equally painstaking when choosing the components that will give their beers a specific flavor profile. These two exacting professions came together this spring when Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. reached out to the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to find a sustainable wheat variety they could use to make a good beer for a great cause.

Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.
The Research Awards Program is sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF). Two recently published studies by University of Georgia researchers show that the consumers surveyed believe buying local is a more sustainable option, but they also value the convenience of online shopping and prefer that retailers provide basic information about the environmental impact of local products in the digital marketplace. Driven by increasing consumer interest in buying local and concerns about the impact of agricultural production systems on a changing climate, the studies were based on data from a web-based survey about consumer interest in sustainability, information about food production and online marketing preferences.
