World Cup rider to lead horsemanship clinic at UGA livestock arena

TaylorMade Horsemanship Clinic has been set for Sept. 6-7 at the University of Georgia’s Livestock Instructional Arena in Athens.

Riders of all levels and disciplines, from weekend trail riders to serious competitors, can come out and learn from one of the sport’s best, Melanie Smith Taylor.

Taylor is one of only two riders to ever win the “Triple Crown of Show Jumping.” However, she is the only one to win the American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby and the American Gold Cup on the same horse, Calypso.

She also participated in the Pan American games, the “Alternate Olympics” and the World Cup Final. After winning the World Cup in 1982, she was named the United States Olympic Committee Sportswoman of the Year.

In 1984, Taylor and Calypso won the Gold Medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Three years later, Taylor retired from competition but has remained active in the equestrian community.

Now a television broadcaster and recognized judge, she continues to be an active member of the horse world, teaching others about the sport.

The clinic will tentatively be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Preregistration is required. Riders and auditors should contact Christine Rodick, the organizer of the event, for more information about the riding clinic at (706) 254-4845. The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is cohosting the clinic.
