The Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame

Cecil Chapman

  • Born: 1911, Emanuel County, Georgia
  • Died: January 10, 1990
  • Honored: October 12, 1990

Occupation: State Soil Conservation Service for 38 years; served as head of the organization for 17 years.

Accomplishments: Mr. Chapman served as Lt. Colonel in the military and led troops in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He served as president of the Soil Conservation Society of America. He received top awards from USDA and was elected a Fellow in the Soil Conservation Society of America. He was named Man of the Year by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia and Man of the Year in Service to Georgia Agriculture by Progressive Farmer magazine and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Forestry Commission. He was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta and Gridiron.
