Three Young Scholars Received Awards for Best Presentations in 2009
This year, for the first time, students in Athens, Griffin and Tifton competed for awards for Best Presentations.
First place award was presented to Ridwan Mahbub from Athens.
Ridwan worked with Dr. Paul Thomas in the Horticulture Department. The title of his presentation was "Developing a Lesson Plan for 4th Grade Teachers to Teach the Relationship Between Asclepias Tuberosa and the Monarch Butterfly".
Second place was awarded to Mei Tsuruta from Athens. Mei interned in the Public Health
Department with Dr. Jeffrey Fisher and Shep Martin. Her presentation was entitled: "Developing Partition Coefficients for PBPK Modeling with Isopropylbenzene".
Third place was presented to Tyler Reeves from Tifton. Tyler worked with Dr. Claudia Dunkley in the Poultry Science Department. The title of his presentation was: "Darkling Beetles in Poultry Science."
Honorable mentions were given to the following students:
Russell Turner from Athens, mentor: Dr. Mark Froetschel, Animal and Dairy Science. Title of presentation: "Bio-Fuel From Bovines."
Zachary Williams from Athens; mentor was Dr. Robert Beckstead, Poultry Science. Title of Presentation: "Creating Transgenic Chickens."
Imran Mahbub from Athens; mentor Dr. Elliott Altman and Jason Wurning, Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Title of Presentation: "Staph Infection: Finding the Cure."
Elizabeth Weeks from Tifton; mentor Dr. Baozhu Guo, USDA - Crop Protection and Management. Title of Presentation: " Developing Aflatoxin-Resistant Corn."
Andrew Mata-Leclerc from Griffin; mentor Jeff Jordan, Agricultural and Applied Economics. Title of Presentation: " Testing Children's Delay of Gratification."
Isabel Ontaneda from Athens; mentor Dr. Ron Walcott, Anita Sparks and Kameka Johnson. Title of Presentation: " Effect of a Type Two Secreted Cellulase Enzyme on a Watermelon seed Colonization by Acidovorax Avenae Subsp. Citrulli."

This year a group of former Young Scholars and members of the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences student organization participated as Peer Mentors to the 2009 Young Scholars. For high school students, a university can be an exciting but also an intimidating place. These students were at hand to share information about college life and their experiences in college with the Young Scholars.
