2018 Ag Snapshots: A brief focus on Georgia's Agricultural Industry

Summary

The annual Ag Snapshots publication builds upon the CAED Farm Gate Value Report and estimates the total economic contribution of food and fiber industries and the ripple effect throughout Georgia. The analysis includes totals for the State of Georgia and for each of the 159 counties.

Situation

Food and fiber industries do not exist in a vacuum, so our report and summary publication seeks to express not only the Farm Gate Value of these sectors, but also quantify the related sectors along the supply chain.

Response

In order to address the need throughout the agriculture/agribusiness and economic development sectors, we analyze the direct Farm Gate Value Report (CAED) figures and quantify the economic contribution of both those sectors and the related industries along the supply chain - input sectors, related ag manufacturing, and spending of employees in all of the sectors. The result of the analysis gives both the output and employment contribution of these important sectors. Because there are local needs for this information as well, we also customize and analyze 159 economic models for each county within the State as well. For a more user-friendly delivery, the maps and graphics were redesigned this year for a more infographic format.

Impact

Our figure for the value of Agriculture as the number one industry in Georgia is quoted widely, in the popular press and research-related articles, as well as used by specific commodity and industry groups. In addition, for 2018, following the devastation of Hurricane Michael, these figures were used to help understand the economic role of these sectors in the affected areas. Each year, over 10,000 of these summary booklets are printed an distributed by request at various CAED/CAES functions, to county leadership, to the Agriculture Commissioner and other economic development and agribusiness groups. In addition, the summary is designed and printed for easy online viewing and featured on the CAED website.
