Working to make food safer
For decades, the UGA Center for Food Safety has been one of the nation's leading research centers and an international leader for food safety and food microbiology research. The center's state-of-the-art facilities enable faculty to conduct cutting-edge research in food safety that benefits the food industry, government agencies and consumers. Scientists pursue scientific research that contributes valuable information to the food industry for solving problems related to foodborne pathogens, which in turn provides consumers with wholesome foods that have minimal risk to human health.

Leaders in plant breeding
The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is ranked No. 2 among U.S. colleges with agricultural and horticultural plant breeding degrees ("Best Agricultural and Horticultural Plant Breeding Colleges of 2017,", and is among the most efficient in the nation in capitalizing on faculty research, primarily through our work with peanuts. In our laboratories, internationally known scientists produce cultivars that people are growing, and we have more varieties in the field than any other university in the country. Plus, we provide the basic science that helps plant breeders around the world develop better, more adaptable, advanced plant varieties. We have mapped the genome of wild peanut, domestic peanut, sorghum, sunflower, canola and corn, which provides the tools for plant breeders and geneticists worldwide to help improve food security and sustainability.

One of the top poultry science programs in the country
The University of Georgia is home to the No. 1 poultry science college in the nation ("The Best Poultry Science Colleges of 2017," UGA's poultry research helped Georgia become the country's top poultry producer by developing and applying technology to keep birds comfortable and healthy while minimizing environmental impact through better housing systems and new protocols for disease prevention. UGA poultry science research programs include poultry health, nutrition, physiology, genetics and molecular biology, environmental management, microbiology and food safety, processing technology, reproduction, and bird well-being.

A world leader in entomology research
The UGA Department of Entomology is ranked No. 8 in the world among university entomology programs (2017, Center for World University Rankings). That ranking rests on the department's well-balanced strengths in basic, applied and directed science. Our deep, diversified team of outstanding scientists across Georgia enables the department to respond to urgent needs, like controlling an outbreak of whiteflies attacking food crops or identifying new pests like kudzu bugs and brown marmorated stinkbugs appearing in fields or ports. While applied scientists work to get the immediate issue under control, basic scientists go to work in the lab to understand the insect biology and seek long-term control solutions. Entomology is an integral part of UGA multidisciplinary teams working to improve agriculture at home and around the world. The unit plays a role in ensuring the success of every area of agriculture but also impacts public health, animal health and environmental health.
